Introduction


Surjapuri is an Indian language spoken mainly in Bihar and also in West Bengal. In Bihar Surjapuri  speakers can be found in Eastern Bihar state, in the northwest of West Bengal. This is the mother tongue of around 35 lakhs population of Kishanganj, Purnia,  Araria Katihar, Islampur and other parts of West Bengal & Nepal.  Surjapuri has absorbed vocabulary mainly from Bengali, Nepali, Hindi, Urdu and Dutch. At present this language does not have any particular script, but it is mainly being written in Nastaʿlīq script and Devanagari script.
